Decorating in Hertford
Hertford is the county town, and its centre has some of the oldest and most varied buildings in Hertfordshire. There are timber-framed buildings, Georgian townhouses with tall sash windows, and rows of Victorian terraces. Much of the centre is a conservation area, so exterior changes to older houses need a bit more thought than on a new-build.
Further out, Bengeo, Sele Farm, Foxholes and the newer developments have more modern housing, where the work is usually a full redecoration when people move in, or a refresh before they sell.
Period houses near the river and town centre
Older Hertford houses often have lime plaster, original cornicing, panelled doors and wooden shutters. These reward a careful approach: breathable paints on old walls, and woodwork rubbed down rather than burnt off where the detail is fine. Grained doors and marbled fire surrounds were common in houses of this age, and I can restore or recreate both.
Being local helps
Because I live in Hertford, I can come round to look at a job without a long drive, and I can fit in smaller jobs such as a single room, a front door or a staircase. Ware, Hertford Heath, Bayford and Watton-at-Stone are all just down the road.
Typical Hertford jobs
A lot of my Hertford work falls into a few patterns. People getting a house ready to sell want neutral walls and fresh woodwork that photograph well. New owners want a whole house redecorated before they unpack. Landlords need a flat freshened up between tenants. Then there are the one-off jobs I enjoy most, like bringing a tired Victorian front door or a painted-over fire surround back to life.
